A major holiday is usually not the time for an important marketing campaign. During these times, people are likely to be preoccupied with personal issues, vacations, and inundations from various other outlets. This isn't a hard-and-fast rule, obviously. For example, Black Friday or other occasion-specific specials may warrant an email sent on a holiday.
Only send emails to those who have requested them. If you mail unknown recipients, your email may be perceived as spam. They'll wonder whether they are interesting in what you are selling or not. This may cause them to simply delete your email, which is just a waste of your time.
Stay up-to-date with your competitors by knowing what they're doing in regards to email marketing. Do this by simply subscribing to their emails. Being aware of their activities can help you make your email campaigns better than theirs. Always try to find areas in which they are not meeting the needs of their customers, so you can try to fulfill those needs. Try to develop a better promotion than they are offering.
Make sure you let your customers know what kind of emails you will be sending them when you are setting up your subscription form. Tell them what kinds of emails they can expect to receive and generally when they will be receiving them. This prevents someone who expected infrequent emails about cats, for example, from becoming surprised when they get one email a week about dogs.
